Allan Robert Thomas

March 22, 1946 - March 13, 2013

3/16/13:
Provided by
Kathy Pickett in Maine of the Down East Sled Dog Club

Allan Thomas, a friend and long time member of Down East Sled Dog Club, that we worked together with at many races over the last 30 years has passed away. Happy Trails Allan, R.I.P. See below.

Allan Robert Thomas, 66, died unexpectedly March 13, 2013 at his home in Garland. He was born March 22, 1946 in Garland, a son of Robert and Eleanor (Grinnell) Thomas. He graduated from the University of Maine in Orono with a degree in computer science. Allan served in U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War era. He retired from the Town of Veazie as code enforcement officer and tax assessor.

He held many jobs over the years, farmer, machinist, computer programmer, town constable, tax assessor, and code enforcement officer. He contributed to his community in many ways, as well. He was a volunteer firefighter, selectman, Scoutmaster, Boy Scout Committee member, and school board member. He was a past master of the Garland Grange and was instrumental in reviving the Dexter Grange which supports youth activities including the local scout groups.

He was an active dog sledder for the last 30 years. He started with supporting his son in the sport, but in the end he ran his own dogs. He had done nearly every job possible in the sport. He was awarded lifetime membership in Downeast Sled Dog Club, and was President of The Maine Highlands Sled Dog Club.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Elaine; his son Ben and wife Denise; his daughter Karen Rodgers and husband Taylor; 3 brothers, Jim and wife Sandra Thomas, Fred Thomas, and Frank and wife Anita Thomas; a sister, Pat and husband Bill Harding; 4 grandchildren, Marie, Alex, Callista, and Fiona. He will also be fondly remembered by Josh, DeAnn, and Janice, his sled dog drivers.

A celebration of his life will be held at 2 PM Sunday, March 17th, at the Garland Grange Hall with a reception to follow. The event is informal and children are both welcome and appreciated. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Dexter Grange, in care of Andrew Mitchell, Overseer, 86 Brewster Farm Road, Dexter, ME 04930.
