They like to be ASKED to do something. If you ask them instead of telling them, it boosts their confidence, and they run faster." So says dogsled racer Mark Dunlap in The Dogs of El Niņo: The Madeline Island Sled Dog Race. "The Dogs of El Niņo" is the story of a race on a tiny island in Northern Wisconsin in a year with almost no snow. This is a character study about the bond between people and animals and the things people do to keep from going crazy over a long, icebound winter. To order: $20 + $5 postage. A summary of the the history of exploration and travel in northeast Greenland is also included as an appendix. To travel long distances by dog sledge in the polar regions is something now experienced by very few westerners. No longer possible in the Antarctic since the ban on dogs there, and with many Inuit dog teams now replaced by motorised skidoos, the Danish Sirius Patrol is almost alone in using dog teams in this traditional way.
