A. Cecil Houghton

April 2, 2009cecilborskydogcropped2.JPG (30560 bytes)

A. Cecil Houghton, passed away peacefully at Trillium Woods Hospice, in the company of his 3 beloved sons, on April 2, 2009. Cecil was 89 years old.

Cecil was known to many in the sled dog world. He was a titan among race organizers, who worked selflessly for the benefit of the sport. He was the recording secretary on the first ISDRA Board of Directors. He was on the founding board of GLSDA in Michigan.

You can read more about this unique character in an article that is on the UP200 website at:

http://www.up200.org/SledDogCrossings/Issue_2/accessiblememories.htm

Memorial donations in his name can be made to Faith Hospice of Grand Rapids, MI., Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Grand Rapids (Cecil helped bring BB/BS to Western Michigan years ago) via United Way at 616-459-6281 or to the charity of your choice. There will be no formal services held, at Cecil's request.

This photo shows Cecil Houghton, with one of his "Borsky" dogs, "Winkum." He introduced the Borsky line of sled dogs in the early 80's. The Borsky dogs were part Borzoi (aka, Russian Wolfhound) mixed with Alaskan Husky, mostly from village lines. He is wearing a seal skin coat from Greenland, where he spent 2 tours of duty during WWII.
