Holmboe October 3, 1925 - March 5, 2011 5/13/2011 Anyone involved or having run the Iditarod would know Tor Holmboe, who was a longtime volunteer, usually at Cripple or Iditarod. He died this year, on the day the race started. Longtime Alaskan and Slana resident Tor Holmboe, 85, died Saturday, March 5, 2011 at Central Peninsula Hospital in Soldotna. Funeral services were at Chapel of the North in Tok. Pastor Terry Brigner
officiated. Burial immediately Mr. Holmboe was born Oct. 3, 1925 in Tromso, Norway and had served in the Norwegian Military Police. He moved to Alaska in 1966, living in Slana. Mr. Holmboe had worked in Cook Inlet, Kodiak and Bristol Bay as a commercial fisherman. He also made a living as a trapper and carpenter. He was a member of the Chapel of the North in Tok and the Kenai Christian Church in Kenai. Mr. Holmboe was a longtime volunteer for the Iditarod sled dog race, serving as checker at Iditarod or Cripple. He was a founding member of the Halfway Hooligans. He also volunteered for the Copper Basin 300. "Dad lived his dream of the Alaskan adventure. He was a Norwegian immigrant who made the interior of Alaska his home. Along with his wife, Norma, he spent many winters trapping on the Yukon River and White River in Canada. Summers were spent commercial fishing. Dad was a noted storyteller, with a unique ability to captivate his audience. He was also known for his great sense of humor. He loved his family, many dear friends, and his faithful canine companion, Jenta. Above all, Dad loved Jesus. He will live on in our hearts," his family said. Mr. Holmboe was preceded in death by his wife Norma Holmboe, parents, Gudleif and Astrid Holmboe of Norway, brother and sister-in-law, Hjalmar and Liv Holmboe of Norway, sister and brother-in-law, Elin and Bjorn Kjaerstad of Norway. He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law Solveig and Bill Cagwin and their children, Beth and Nora and their families; Mette and Dave Cook and their children, Bobby, Erik, Keri and Kevin and their families; Kari and Claude Hulien, and their children, Karrie, Luke, Rebekah and Inger and their families; and 21 great-grandchildren.
