Harold F. Greenway 1935 - 2012 11/6/2012 Harold F. Greenway, 77, of Fairbanks, passed away Nov. 2, 2012. He was born in Kallands, Alaska, on Jan. 12, 1935, and was the fourth child of Rex and Katherine Greenway. He spent his childhood living a subsistence lifestyle. It is there that he learned and developed his passion for dog mushing. Early on, Harold went to the Eklutna Boarding School in Southcentral Alaska, then later continued his education at Mt. Edgecumbe in Sitka. A fond family memory is of Harold singing the 1940s hit song, "Paper Doll," by the Mills Brothers, in front of the whole school at Eklutna at the young age of 9. One of Harold's pastimes while at Eklutna was making figures of dogs and dogsleds out of paper, a precursor to his later passion for creating real dog sleds. One of these sleds is on display at the Morris Thompson Cultural Center in Fairbanks. After high school he moved to Anchorage where he met and married his first wife, Mary Davis. They moved to Fairbanks where they had a daughter, Simone, and a son, Harold Dallas. Harold worked various civil service jobs in Anchorage, Fairbanks and Pearl City, Hawaii. After moving back to Fairbanks in the late 1950s, he met Vivian Orrison. He became a stepfather to Vivian's four children, Linda, Diane, Tim and Jim. They were married for 14 years and had one son, Shawn. In the 1960s, Harold became involved in competitive dog
mushing. In 1971, he drove Bill Taylor's team to a North American
Championship and, in 1973, he teamed up with his brother, John Greenway, to
win the same title again. As a proud member of the Laborers Local 942, he worked on several projects throughout Alaska, including construction of the Haul Road, trans-Alaska pipeline, Fairbanks Memorial Hospital, and the Nenana and Hurricane Gulch bridges. Harold made many friends, and they remember him as an honest man who worked hard and was quick to offer a helping hand. He was a deeply spiritual man as well as an avid reader, storyteller and giver of nicknames. Harold's family will always remember him as a loving father, grandpa and uncle. His sense of humor and knack for storytelling could bring smiles and laughter to any room. He was a man who lived life independently and on his own terms. He is survived by his children, Simone Greenway and her companion Carl Bauman, her children, Jordan Getz and Julianna Getz and great-grandson, Jaegar, of Soldotna and Wasilla; Joy Thompson and her husband Henry and their children, Tara and Elizabeth of Melbourne Fla.; Harold Dallas Greenway of Wasilla, and Shawn Greenway and his wife Tanya, and their children, Erin, Jonathan, and Jayson; his sisters, Ruth Macchione, Lillian Folger and Peggy Wright; his brothers, John Greenway, Leonard Mayo, Edward Mayo, Fred Mayo, and Clyde Mayo, and numerous nieces and nephews. Harold was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Nancy; sisters, Eleanor Michel and Thelma Thompson; and brother, Alfred Mayo. Services will be held at noon Saturday, November 10, 2012 at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, 1029 First Ave., with a gathering immediately following in the Parish Hall.
