Iditarod Teacher’s Conference & Midwest Sled Dog
Symposium
The Midwest Iditarod Teacher’s Conference will take place September 24th in Curtis, Michigan. The event features keynote speaker Trent Herbst of Ketchum, Idaho. Trent has run the Iditarod four times, with the unique assistance of his students. Other speakers include Diane Johnson, Iditarod Education Coordinator, Terrie Hanke, 2006 Target Iditarod Teacher on the Trail, Herb Brambley, 2009 Target Iditarod Teacher on the Trail, Craig Adams, creator of Mushsoft and Iditarod timing software, Ed White, author of Foxy’s Tale, Jackie Winkowski, author of Miki’s Challenge, and a panel of teachers to share their experiences teaching the Iditarod as part of their curriculum. The event beings at 8 am on Friday, September 24th. The cost is $20 in advance, or $30 after September 17th. The 2nd Annual Midwest Mushing Symposium will take place on Saturday, September 25, also in Curtis, Michigan. The keynote speaker for the symposium is Sebastian Schnuelle of Whitehorse, Canada. There will be presentations and round table discussions through out the day, including: Training Methods with Ken Chezik, Bruce Magnusson and Sebastian Schnuelle; Canine Exams and Treatments along the Trail with Dr. Nick Vukich; Behind the Scenes of Race Organizations with representatives from the UP 200, John Beargrease, Copper Dog and White Oak Classic races; Tales of Midwest Mushing with legends Clyde Risdon, Ian MacKenzie and Jim Oehlschlaeger.
