Insight into early Iditarods from Joe May

Always an innovator, Joe says "that was before straw was shipped out on the trail for bedding. I sent burlap sandbags out with my feed to bed dogs on. Sugar was a leader on loan from Donna Gentry and somewhat short coated and I recall Rhone was a deep freeze. I made her the coat from one of the sandbags. Was possibly the first bedding (other than spruce boughs) and dog coat used on the Iditarod."
