Will mentor by: e-mail, phone and in person
Will mentor in: distance, recreation and general
E-mail address: info@crowfliesguideservice.com
Phone: (207) 725-2738
Experience: I have nine years of experience racing Alaskan huskies. I started out
racing and recreationally mushing with four German shorthaired pointers and soon learned
that dog sledding was my passion. I "graduated" to racing 6-dog teams and
started acquiring Alaskan huskies. I've been racing mid distance (30 and 60 mile races)
for the past five years and operate a racing and touring kennel of 12 Alaskan huskies..
I was fortunate when I got started to have a mentor (Paul Therriault, ME) with whom I
trained regularly. I learned more from Paul in two years than I could have learned on my
own in ten. Over the years we have bounced ideas off one another and developed training
and racing strategies that have benefited us both. I would like to pass along my knowledge
to others in hopes of inspiring them as I was inspired by Paul's enthusiasm for the dog
sledding. I look forward to helping any one interested in getting started or those wanting
to try sprint or mid distance racing. Of course, working with folks individually, with
their team or mine, is what I prefer because I enjoy teaching "experientially."
Although I also welcome email or phone calls.
Name: Kathy or Grey Pickett
Hometown: Oxford, ME
Will mentor by: e-mail, phone and in person
Will mentor in: skijoring, sprint and general
E-mail address: nooksack@verizon.net
Phone: 207-539-4324
Experience: Have been running sprint races since 1978 and managing races for
DESDC since then. Grey ran 6 dog, 8 dog and unlimited until health problems caused him to
give up racing in 1995. He also ran 30-100 milers for several seasons in late 70's and
early 80's. Our daughter, Sara Vanderwood, started racing at 6, raced all through school,
went to University of Alaska-Fairbanks on cross country ski scholarship, worked at Dog
Mushing Museum in Fairbanks for 3 summers and occasionally helped out at Bill Taylor's
kennel. She skijored up there and came home in 1995 with boyfriend ( now husband, Marc
Vanderwood ) to help run the kennel and become a skijoring evangelist. She and Marc race 2
dog skijoring and Sara races a 6 dog pro team in New England. I race 4 dog pro and
have been since 1990. I am race Marshall for all DESDC races and Grey is chief
judge. He has also been trail boss and lays out a great trail. We started in 1976 with one
Siberian and very quickly lost control and within several years had up to 50 dogs.
We switched to all Alaskans in 1984 when Sara wanted to be more competitive. Most
of our dogs are Gareth Wright lines based on Rusty or Taylor lines based on Killer. As a
side bar we have owned and operated Nooksack Racing Supply since 1977.
