Scruggs, missing Iditarod dog, found
Scruggs the missing Iditarod dog has been found.
Barbara Swenson adopted the retired sled dog from Aliy Zikle at the end of June. She had Scruggs in Anchorage just one day before the dog got spooked by a lawnmower and took off in the Campbell Airstrip area on June 25.
Swenson posted flyers on nearby tras and checked Animal Care and Control every day. Zirkle even came down twice to help look for Scruggs.
On Thursday, July 6, she received a call someone spotted the dog running on the Seward Highway near Potter Marsh.
“That night Aliy and I were up in that area for hours and in the Golden View area until after 11 that night searching for him. We were trying to get Aliy’s scent out in the area,” Swenson explained.
The next evening Swenson says a woman called to say she had found Scruggs hiding underneath the porch of a house in Bear Valley.
