Remy Coste of France eked out another one minute and seven seconds on current defending champion Anny Malo on Stage Three of the 2024 Pedigree Stage Stop Race in Pinedale, Wyoming today. Today’s slim victory gives Coste a margin of 00:03:19 going into the Big Piney / Marbleton hosted Stage Four set to commence tomorrow (Tuesday) morning at 8:30 a.m. at the Upper Green River trailhead.
The dual between Coste & Malo is proving to be true knuckle biter and is capturing the attention of mushing fans worldwide as the Frenchman and the French-Canadian trade blows in the rugged mountains of western Wyoming.
The dual between defending champion Malo and newcomer Coste is a display of two markedly
different strategies. Stage Stop competitors pull from a pool of 16 dogs, running a maximum of 12 dogs on any given day. While Malo has been running 10 dogs each day, leaving 6 behind on the bench, Coste has been utilizing a two-team strategy, alternating eight dogs each day with all dogs in his pool having a full day off between runs.
There is a similar battle going on for the third-place spot as Cathy Rivest of Quebec, Laura Bontrager of Michigan, Jess Moore of Wyoming, and Michael Tetzner of Germany are separated by less than twelve minutes in positions three through six.
With the race less than halfway complete and similar close times through the remainder of the field, much remains as to how the $165,000.00 in prize money will be distributed.
