Local musher training for Yukon Quest
Alaskan Huskies are born to run. Not even rain and warmer temperatures can keep these dogs from doing what they were made to do.
“I mean the dogs are living outside and they’re working outside but that’s what they love to do is run,” said Nature Kennels Owner Tasha Stielstra.
That running is also a part of their training which dogs and mushers enjoy.
“Right now we’re doing about 40 mile runs so we’re out four to six hours just playing around and visiting new trails and having fun out there with each other,” said Racing Musher Laura Neese.
Laura and the dogs at Natures Kennel are training for the Yukon Quest, a 1,000-mile sled dog race that usually lasts about nine days. The Yukon Quest has rougher terrain than the Iditarod and Laura and her team will crest three different mountains.
