Kobuk 440 vet cares for Ambler pets, too - and teaches residents to give rabies vaccines
With three boxes full of medication and wearing the warmest parka she could find, Liz Millman came to Ambler to care for sled dogs and pets.
Kobuk 440 mushers started to arrive in the village on April 8 after riding their teams almost 200 miles from Kotzebue, and Millman was among those who examined the dogs and provided them with necessary medications. But while Millman was in Ambler, she also vaccinated pets from rabies. She also taught a few people, including two Ambler residents and a musher, how to administer the vaccines.
A state-funded lay vaccinator program allows non-medical professionals to vaccinate dogs and cats against rabies - a virus that infects mammals including humans and spreads through animal bites. Lay vaccinators are especially needed in communities like Ambler that don't have access to veterinary healthcare.
