A small town just outside of Minneapolis is gearing up to produce an authentic, world-class sled dog race within a top 20 major metropolitan area this coming winter.
Called the
Klondike Dog Derby, the 30 to 50-mile race will launch from Excelsior, run along the shoreline of Lake Minnetonka by Wayzata, Mound and other lakeside cities, and then finish up in Excelsior. The purse will be $25,000. Vet checks and a musher’s dinner is planned for Saturday, Feb. 8, 2020, and the race is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 9. More than 200,000 people are expected to take in the event given Excelsior is only 20 minutes west of downtown Minneapolis.
Organizers include mushers and sled dog racing officials from Ely and other parts of northern Minnesota. Their goal is to produce a fun race that also celebrates the sport and the spirit of the authentic North. Days preceding the race will include several events educating residents of the Greater Twin Cities area, and others, about the incredible athleticism and passion of sled dogs and mushers, and the rich history of the sport.
