Two North Fremont High School graduates have literally left their mark on their high school – at the school’s entrance.
Alexa Nedrow and Renee Fabanich spent the last six months painting a mural of Ashton’s famous dog derby. The young women started the project in January, graduated in May and finished earlier this month.
The annual American Dog Derby has been a part of Ashton since 1917. The event is known among racers from throughout the country, proving to be a huge draw every February.
A similar dog derby mural had been a part of the old North Fremont High School that workers tore down, said North Fremont High School art teacher Janine Davidson.
According to the NFHS website, the old school building was built in 1951 and closed down sometime in 2004 before being demolished.
“When I took this position at the school, one of the teachers mentioned to me that ‘This community really misses that mural,’” Davidson said. “That’s why we decided to take on this endeavor. It was a big project for those two girls. They did it all on their own. They had to do the research. They had to find visuals and drew their sketches. It was a long process to prep for it and long before they started.”
In January, Davidson asked Nedrow and Fabanich to paint a new dog sled derby mural.
“The mural was their commitment for the semester,” Davidson said.
In their research, the young women learned that a traveling artist passing through Ashton painted the first mural. To help recreate it, Nedrow and Fabanich took pictures of the Tetons and relied on photos taken during the annual races.
