Hudson Bay Quest Race Announcement - Churchill, Manitoba
2018 HUDSON BAY QUEST IS ON!!!!!
After many months of extra planning the HBQ Chairperson (Bill Dingwall) announced that the 2018 edition of the Hudson Bay Quest is on. The HBQ committee bumped the registration back by one month in order to give them the extra time to finalize the alternate plans that will be needed to run the 2018 race.
The 2017 edition was cancelled one week before the race when a snow storm brought 30 inches of snow accompanied by 70 mph winds into the Churchill, Manitoba area. The results of that storm had the Town of Churchill shutdown for 4 days and no railway service for 3 weeks. The railway system is an essential part of day to day life in Churchill and the way HBQ moves its officiating and vet teams to the race’s checkpoint.
In April the resulting snow melt caused damage to the railway system and washed out sections of the track making it unusable. The owners of the railway system and the Canadian Government have been fighting over who will fix the railway line all summer and nothing has happened.
The HBQ committee has been awaiting word about the fixing of the railway line, but finally ran out of time and had to make alternate arrangements for the 2018 race. With those arrangements made the committee announced the registration for the 2018 race open at 12:00 pm noon (central time) on December 1, 2017.
When you put together that the HBQ is one of the last distance races for the season in the mid-west, the uniqueness of the race and the maximum entry of 15 teams. The field of competitors should fill up quickly.
