The ninth Annual Wawa Gold Quest Sled Dog Race, along the north shore of Great Lake
Superior, in the home of the Big Goose ... Wawa, Ontario CANADA, was a huge success.
On February 23, 2002 dog sport enthusiast's enjoyed a solid two foot base of snow with a fresh groomed top for a wonderfully fast snow trail for 2002. With a temperature of minus 9 to minus 3 C. and overcast sky, just before more snowfall, the racers returned to Wawa following a most scenic and hilly trail.
Dean Gulden, Grand Marais, MN topped a highly competitive field to win $2500. by three seconds over Ian MacKenzie, Bruce Mines, Ontario. The trail was exactly 80 km or 50 miles. All of the racers were in the money.
In the Skijoring Race Mike Sobleskey topped the field to win $400. The real highlight was the socialization, of mushers, at the Polish Hall, Mission Road by the Polish Ladies who presented the scrumptious buffet banquet.
