Yankee Alaskan Malamute Club of New England in cooperation with the Phillips Brook Backcountry Recreation Area and the Northern White Mountain Chamber of Commerce "Winterfest 2001" put on the Second Annual North Country Freight Race, February 24, 2001. Our Second Annual Fun Race was a great success with sixteen teams of various northern breeds (e.g. Alaskan Malamutes, Siberian Huskies, Chinooks and Alaskan Huskies) racing in three classes over a rugged and picturesque network of trails. Each team had to carry one 40 lb. bag of dog food per dog in harness. The novice class (1-3 dogs) ran over a 5.0 mile loop and the intermediate class (3-6 dogs) ran over a rigorous 7.0 mile loop. The open class (6-10 dogs) ran over a rigorous 12 mile loop.

As race marshal, Marc J. Garrett would like to thank the race committee (Ellen Dawson, John Foy and Kevin Hall) for their yeoman efforts in putting this event together. We would also like to thank the Phillips Brook Backcountry Recreation Area and the Northern White Mountain Chamber of Commerce for their involvement and sponsorship; Precise Dog Food, Pine Tree Knits, Hall Sleds and Black Ice Sledding Equipment for their sponsorship and prizes. The weather also cooperated with a clear 25^o F day at race time, after a night and early morning of howling gales of up to 50 mph. Also thanks to all of the volunteers and spectators who came out to assist and support our efforts. All voiced of having a great time. We again look forward to, and are planning for next year's race.
