Conditions:
Despite the history of gold production at Wawa, Ontario Canada, mushers
were surprised to find diamond prospectors camped along the race trail actively
staking out diamond mine claims on snowshoe. The temperatures were mostly just
below zero C. There was a foot of new snow the day before the race started. Right after
the race started, on February 24th at 10 A.M., a winter storm began that closed the
Queen's highway for 36 hours. Dean Gulden, from Grand Marais, MN, won the Sportsmanship
Award for warning other dogs, and their mushers, when changing conditions opened dangerous
cracks in a bridge.
A $6000 purse was shared between the 130 and 65 mile teams.
